In a superb location and within 50 meters of the main entrance to Ashford Castle, this irregular shaped block of forestry has a long frontage to the Cong to The Neale road (R345). This mixed conifer and broad leaf plantation was planted in 1961 with numerous thinnings taking place since then. Most trees are mature with some natural regeneration of varying ages in the undergrowth and, at present, the percentage canopy breakdown is approximately as follows:
Sycamore 30%, Ash 30%, Beech 5%, other broad leaves (Holly, Lime, Hazel, Whitethorn) 10% - Spruce and Larch 10%, Douglas Fir 15%.
Planning permission was applied for and granted for a development of 8 houses on the land in 2005 but this development, which was regarded as excessive by local residents, was appealed by them to An Bord Pleanala and this appeal was successful, thereby revoking the planning permission previously granted.
It is, however, considered likely that an application for 1 or 2 houses will be successful on this land.
